It's challenging to find music without percussion. See for yourself; flip through the stations on the radio. Drums and percussion are part of almost all music. Music makes the world go round. People love music. Musicians take it an extra step beyond the "what" to learn the "how" and "why". Some get consumed by it as it becomes who they are.
I have been playing drums since 1979. I started programming computers in 1983, and I have been working in IT professionally since 1996. I love performing music and I love to teach. Now it is time for me to put it all together. I am offering free drum lessons on this Web site. My goal is to offer the best online drum lessons, from beginner level to advanced. I hope your experience here is a great one, and I hope you take something from this Web site that influences you positively in your life.
Learning the drums can be challenging, but you get out of it what you put into it. I will make every effort to make learning the drums as fun and easy as possible without being right next to you. I will provide easy navigation of this Web site, clear instructions, helpful images (because a picture is worth a thousand words), and video clips to get my points across. I want you to absorb what I present at the level you need, because I want you to "stick" with it.
This Web site started being constructed on 2/2/2011. It will take a while to get the material together. If I do not have what you are looking for please send me an Email and I will do my best to provide your solution quickly. This Web site will grow and will improve. Make a bookmark of this site so you can come back often and see the new things I add.
I have played several kinds of drum sets, both acoustic and electronic, and many percussion instruments. I will provide helpful tips and instruction on drumsticks, drumsets, drum tuning, cymbals, and various percussion from around the world such as the djembe, Latin percussion and more. I want to eventually get into talking about musical scales and harmonies (chords) so you can play instruments such as the balls, chimes, xylophone, marimba, and vibraphone (vibes). The more types of percussion instruments you can play, the more oportunities and fun you will have.
I want to teach you how to read music as we go through the training. I have a proven system for counting that enables a thorough understanding of written music notation, rhythm and timing. I strongly suggest that you follow my counting methods because it will give you a foundation of understanding that will propel you to mastering all of the techniques. It also gives me an easy way to communicate with you so you can easily understand what I am saying.
I have taught a lot of people of all ages to play the drums. Everyone has a slightly different learning style. I found that even with these differences, in all cases I taught drums and rhythm in the way I understand them. The students who became really good approached it with enthusiasm. Have fun!
