Hi, my name is Ken Hanson. I have been playing drums since 1979, when I started taking private drum lessons. In 1981 I joined my middle school band for three years where I absorbed my foundation of music from a band instructor who had the most amazing method of teaching music theory.
1983 was a huge year for me in self-instruction. I got my my first drum set and started teaching myself how to play it by listening to interesting drum patterns in rock music and writing them down using the music theory that I had learned. I wanted to get better so I started taking private drum set lessons, but my teacher was actually holding me back so after a few months I quit lessons and continued to learn on my own. This is also the same year I taught myself to write computer programs. At that time I did not realize how these two skills would eventually come together.
Several years later I taught many students how to play the drum set, and one student I took beyond to also teach him the bells where he learned about music scales, chords, and harmonies. I developed a way of transforming my knowledge into simple parts that were easily understood by my students. I learned what works and what does not work. I learned to teach people with different personalities and varying degrees of the desire to learn and progress.
I have been working as an Information Technology (IT) professional since 1996. I love performing music and I love to teach. Now it is time for me to put it all together. I am offering free drum lessons on this Web site. My goal is to offer the best online drum lessons, from beginner level through advanced. I hope your experience here is a great one, and I hope you take something from this Web site that influences you positively in your life.
